This is a photograph of the glaze detail on a pot I made. It is a Neptheline Syenite glaze which worked well for the oxide decorations I was doing at that time.(Summertown, South Australia.) This glaze developed a crackle, which when stained gave a feeling of age. Normally crazing is regarded as a fault, but on many stoneware glazes it is acceptable. Potters generaly refer to this effect as a 'crackle,' rather than call it a 'craze.' This particular glaze has a mellow quality when fired under 'reduction' but is far less appealing when fired under oxidation.
